The Curriculum at All Saints

We have developed our curriculum in line with the requirements of the new National Curriculum while trying to make sure that it continues to be broad, balanced and exciting for the children.

These programmes of study give an overview what the children will be studying term by term.

Much more information is available and in greater detail on our secure Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and includes activities to enable the children to enhance their learning at home. These are regularly updated by teachers.

Teachers use a variety of teaching techniques ranging from whole class teaching through group work to individual tuition depending on the nature of the task. We believe in developing the children’s ‘love of learning’ and their understanding of how to become independent learners in a fast changing world. We encourage them to have high aspirations and ‘reach for the sky’.

Phonics is taught using a variety of resources rather than one specific commercial scheme. These resources include “Letters and Sounds”, “Phonicsplay”, “Jolly Phonics” and “Espresso Phonics”. Children are taught the sounds and names of letters; recognise what they look like; and how blend these to make up words. In all years children are put in groups that recognise their differing levels of development so that all children are appropriately challenged.

We ensure that they have the best and most up to date equipment to use to enhance their learning. This includes high quality ICT devices such as laptops, iPads and Macbooks wirelessly linked to our school network.

We have developed a large area on the school grounds as an Outdoor Learning Environment – “All Saints Al Fresco”. This has become an outdoor ‘classroom’ where children can learn in a safe environment but one that includes opportunities for problem solving, cooperative work and developing good decision making skills.

We believe in Equality of Opportunity for all and the importance that we put on meeting the needs of children with Special Educational Needs reflects this. Every child is closely monitored from their first day at school. This ensures early intervention to address any concerns that we may have. We liaise closely with outside agencies (eg. Educational Psychologists, Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Behaviour Support Services, Learning Support Services) to help ensure that appropriate strategies are used. There are Teaching Assistants in every class and two Learning Support Teachers in school to help these children.

We have also employed an independent Speech and Language Therapist to work with children to improve communication skills at an early age but also to improve the skill levels of staff.

Sex and Relationships Education (SRE) is taught as part of our PSHE scheme of work. In Year 6, more detailed information is taught with input from the school nurse. Notification is given to parents prior to these sessions and any videos shown are available to any parent who may like to scrutinise the content.

You have the right as parents to withdraw your child from our Collective Act of Worship, Religious Education and Sex Education. Please inform the school if you wish your child to be excluded from any of these in writing.

All policies are available to any parent of the school.
