Year 4 2023 - 2024

Mr Neill

Welcome to Year 4!

Teacher - Mr Neill

Teaching Assistant(s) - Mrs Crewdson

Year 4 is an exciting time in your child’s education as we continue to promote independent learning skills in preparation for the transition to upper Key Stage 2 and beyond. We aim to provide cross-curricular learning opportunities based around our topics including 'Changing Stockport', 'Anglo Saxon Arts & Culture' and 'National Parks of North America'.

Towards the end of the year, the children will be undertaking an online multiplication tables check. Further information about this can be found in the attached leaflet. The purpose of the check is to ensure that children are able to quickly recall multiplication facts up to 12 x 12, as this is essential for future success in mathematics. The check will also help to identify children who may need additional support.

We hope that you will find the information on our class page useful. Should you have any queries or concerns, please do not hesitate to speak to us at the end of the day. Alternatively, please contact the office to arrange a mutually convenient time to speak on the telephone.

How you can help your child

Reading – Please try to read with your child as much as possible. All children have a school reading book at an appropriate level for them and some children may have brought home a ‘reading for pleasure’ book from our reading corner. Whilst many children will be able to read independently, it is still beneficial to listen to them reading and even to read to them so that they hear an adult modelling fluency and expression. Just 5 or 10 minutes reading each day will have a big impact on their reading.

Spellings – All children have weekly spellings which should be practised throughout the week ready for their spelling test on a Tuesday.

Homework – Weekly homework is set on a Thursday, this should be returned by the following Wednesday so it can be marked and sent out the next day. The homework sheets cover a range of skills so that your child is constantly practising them throughout the year. If your child has any difficulty completing particular questions, please make a note and we will go over these with them.

Multiplication and division facts – In preparation for the multiplication tables check, your child should be practising their multiplication and division facts regularly. All children have access to Time Table Rockstars which can be accessed at home, and there are regular Battles of the Bands between the classes with the incentive of additional Golden Time for the winning class. In school, we practise our multiplication facts using the BBC Super Movers videos which are available on the BBC website.

Book bags – Please ensure that your child brings their book bag, together with their reading book, reading record and spelling practice book, each day.

PE kit – Please ensure that your child has both an indoor and outdoor PE kit in school. Our indoor PE session is currently on a Wednesday morning and the children have a games session with our sports coaches on a Wednesday afternoon. Due to the current seasonal weather, we advise you supply your child with joggers and a zipped jacket in addition to usual PE kit. Please name all kit to reduce the risk of your child losing it.

After the February half term, the children will commence weekly swimming lessons. Further information about this will be provided nearer the time.
